Mutual funds seem to be like the investment options we were given for our pension funds... makes sense I suppose.

Thanks Dec... The third post in that thread is what I was talking about. I don't really want to pay anyone �80 for maintaining an account that I barely use. I suppose I'll just hold off on this until I feel like I'll be able to devote more time to it.

I've done a fair bit of research into this and unfortunately it is not as easy as it seems. They are all quite awkward to use and to set up your account.

Sharewatch is quite competitive on charges, and you can pay a one off transactional fee which is a bit more flexible than other sites. Check it out here here

There is a discussion on this topic here which gives a lot of peoples opinins and doesn't really come to any conclussions. A bit like anycraic really.

I take (and highly recommend) the "dummy" route of investing in mutual funds over stocks: basically investing in a broad geographical area/industrial sector of interest as opposed to specific companies, because while I like to pretend I have an idea about what is generally good and bad, I do not have the faintest idea about which exact companies I should buy shares in.

You decide which mutual funds you want to invest in based on the charter/remit and also on how well that fits with a. your ethics b. their expert-rated risk factor c. their track record d. what you FEEL will be a good investment (The Pumpkin mutual fund BEFORE Halloween Homer) (note how prolonged thought on investment becomes irrelevant for non-experts like me: the stock market seems to be based on pure emotion and psychology and not reason)

3. You hand over your money to a broker who decides what exact companies to distribute you money over: in accordance with and restricted by the codes mandated by the charter of the mutual fund you have selected.

4. The broker is motivated to do a good job because they get a cut of the profits made by your (their!) investment.

Mutual funds involve percentage entry (when you buy) and exit (when you sell) fees: so quick buy-sell operations are not profitable. Think of it as a slightly riskier, potentially more rewarding long term investment. And as Barry says, don't put all your eggs in one basket: there are "Worldwide" ultra-generic funds that are low-risk and low-return, as well as ultra-specific funds that are the opposite on both counts. A combination of both will see you make a tidy sum but also not lose everything if the shit hits the fan (or in our present case, if someone cleans the shit of the fan and then drops the bucket of mopped-up shit on the fan again)

I can recommend Rabodirect for mutual funds, as well as high interest and safe regular savings accounts. Their ads are in fact true: they are totally open and up front and do not fuck you about with hidden costs or any bullshit. Also it is all Web-based so a. no costs for running their building/staff b. dead handy! but c. no nice personal face to face meetings to build trust, if you're into that kind of thing d. no ATM cards or machines.

Rabodirect list the mutual funds they enable you to investment in along with their past performance (with the nice, totally clear note printed "past performance does not indicate future performance") and you can also check out more details about funds at generic sites like Bloomberg and Morningstar (Google please... too lazy).

Is it a good idea to invest in AIB or BoI? Yes. But only if you are investing with a global, risk-spread strategy. Investing in one bank is stupid. You need to invest across different industries across different markets across different countries.

This is the mistake people make when they lose loads of money. They invest everything in eircom. Or they invest everything in stock options in their own company. Besides, Warren Buffet, one of the top three richest men in the world (who in 2007, when most investors were beginning to feel the effects of the credit crunch and were scrambling to save money increased his own personal fortune [not just of his company's fortune, but his own personal fortune] by over 10 billion dollars, an increase of nearly 33%) said about a month ago that he's going investing in simple shares of simple companies and he'll make lots of money on it while everyone is in a panic.

People forget that investing is a medium-to-long-term return, unless you set out a specific short term investment plan, which is not an easy thing to do and the average small investor hasn't got the time or the information to do that. They want a quick return on investing shares, and then kick up a fuss and give out when they lose their money.

If the share prices go much lower, there's a slim chance one or both banks will be nationalised (just a chance, I know!). If this happens who knows what will happen to your investment value: A.1 nationalised and this causes prosperity and rise in your investment value; A.2 nationalised and this causes further panic and damage; B.1 not nationalised and you timed your investment right; B.2. not nationalised and prices continue to fall for another bit/9 months/year/more but eventually you should see some profit. So it depends if you feel lucky, punk (just look at the UK)! I feel nationalisation won't happen, but there is no real evidence behind that... just emotions (that's why Barry is so good with money, he channels 100% of his emotions into it, leaving him as an empty shell of a man when it comes to interpersonal human emotions)

As an aside: I invested in some mutual funds (not in bank shares thank God) a couple of weeks ago thinking the whole situation couldn't get much worse... and was still wrong (damn you emerging European market!). In the long term I hope that share prices will return to some sane pre-horribleness levels, but if you're looking for short- or medium-term returns on investment I would be careful: could be another year and a half.

As an aside to this aside: ultimately the concept of "growth is good" on a finite planet is debatable, but this is only my personal, face value, logical conclusion without truly knowing anything about the craziness that is the stock market/finance (hence the mutual funds handled by some faceless broker whose expertise I "trust") and I invite others opinions. Why would I even think of investing in this case? Should we start culling the human population? Should the majority of the world be forced to dump some of our more damaging technology, stop travelling and return to the middle ages for a few centuries until we can sort out some cleaner technology, enforce strict breeding rules and start habitating off the face of the earth? Can we all save up and chip in enough money to buy Nigel a Doomlord power ring to pragmatically "fix" this shit up?!?

A very good question. Shares are valued at what the last person was willing to pay for them on the open market. These banks will regain their value. If you have deep pockets, then buy now. If you can't afford to wait fot the returns (Could be 3 years, but will be worth it), then don't bother. Also... if you can't afford to wait, then take your savings out and put them in a bank that will pay a decent interest rate!
